Laser Cut Fabric.
Fabric laser cutting is one of the services offered by Podbox that pushes the boundaries of this technology. A woven fabric, by definition, relies on interlocking fine strands of material to create it’s shape. These can easily unravel with just a single broken strand so cutting through these with a laser seemed initially to be a fruitless task. However, there is a way round this! We have sourced a range of manmade woven fabrics that can be cut with laser. The laser gently heats the edge of the fabric, bonding strands together creating a seal to prevent unravelling. Delicate patterns can be achieved similar to lace or flocked fabric. These fabrics can then be used in furnishing, fashion design and a range of other crafts.
As with all forms of laser cutting, it’s important to know the limitations. The best laser cutting patterns are those which run perpendicular to the weave. The speed and power of the laser must also be carefully managed to limit burning. Careful selection of fabric is required from the outset and testing is recommended to assess burning potential.
